Cherished Memories

© Sybille Sterk
Do not copy or publish this in any way, shape or form without my written permission.

This is a photograph I took of a mobile I made a while ago. It was a prototype and still hangs in my living room window and every time I look at it, it makes me smile. The heart is from seaglass and it's a real sea urchin shell found on a beach somewhere in Turkey.

To me the image just speaks of memories, maybe of a treasured holiday on a magical beach somewhere.

Created with my own photographs in Photoshop, no stock used.

Mobile - Captain Jack

This is my latest mobile. The wonderful Sue sent me a massive parcel of driftwood. I was dying to make something with it and on Saturday I made my first (mostly) driftwood mobile. Whilst I was making it, my son was watching Pirates of the Caribbean... and when it was finished (the mobile) it reminded me of Captain Jack - the beads in his hair, a little rough around the edges, suprising, butch and charming all at the same time... and a little scary. :-)

I've used lots of different beads, shells, driftwood, seaglass and hemp to put  it all together, hours of stringing and a little crochet. Oh, and there's a little aluminium wire to hold the beads at the top in place.

If you like this... just contact me. It's for sale and I'd love to see it go to a good home. :-)

Mermaid's Lullabye - Mobile

This is my latest commission "Mermaid's Lullabye". It has been designed to go into a baby's nursery so the colours are soft and dreamy; the razor clam shells provide the mobile with a lovely sound and the mirrors add sparkle. It will go to Sue at Studio Window tomorrow.

If you want your own, use the contact button on the right-hand side to send me an e-mail. I don't bite!

Seashells by the Seashore - Mobile

This is a present for Steve. It's his birthday today. :-)

The large shells and the razor clam shells plus the feather are from Holme Beach, the rest - recycled glass beads, sea glass, fossil, sea urchin and other shells and the lava cube beads - are from my stash. I've used two types of hemp, metallic thread and gunmetal wire to attach everything to the aluminium hand shaped hanger.

It was fun to make and I am considering to make some more. I'll have to go to the beach again to collect some more shells and feathers first though. If you're interested in a mobile like this, let me know. :-)

Jewellery Party Special - Summer In Nice

A while back, when I made Spring in Paris, Alison asked me when I am going to make a 'Summer in Nice' necklace. Well, here it is. :-)

Summer In Nice

Blues, from watery turquoise to deep teal blue:

I have used the most wonderful recycled glass beads, mostly from the African Fabric Shop, which have the most beautiful texture and colours. They almost look like sea glass. There's some info about them here.

I've combined the lovely beads with some ribbed gunmetal beads and matte black findings.

The pretty organza and taffeta flower sits on a vintage filigree that has been painted and 'be-glittered' by me and then covered in special varnish.

Here are some close-ups of the beautiful beads. The beads graduate in colour and size along the necklace.

Next to the flower is a little dangle with a dragonfly, again painted and 'be-glittered', a little altered lock and a row of teal glass pearls. Each of the little 'dangles' hangs from a different chain.

The main chain is the most beautiful deep blue (enameled) with a lovely texture and weight.

The necklace can be worn round your neck long, or you can wrap it round twice. It has a clasp which makes adjusting it much easier.

The necklace will be for sale tomorrow at the jewellery party. If it doesn't sell.... I might just keep it. :-)

Stormy Sea

This is a lariat style necklace I made for Caroline. Check out her blog here.

It is special, for one, it's been made just for her, secondly because it's so pretty, thirdly, because I used loads of different techniques and different beads, bits of chain and things, and, lastly, because it's a swap. A little dragon made by Caroline's fair hands for my son in exchange for the lariat.

If you ever feel you'd like to swap rather than buy, make me an offer I can't refuse! It has to be handmade though, or something to make something with.... Surprise me!

Here it is in all its glory:

The whole lariat - it will fit twice around your neck or can be worn long like a flapper necklace or it can be hooked together any way you like using the links.

Here's a selection of the beads and different types of chain I've used.

A wrapped bit of smooth sea glass as one of the centre pieces:

The dangle that can be pushed through the puddle shaped wire form (see below) if the necklace is worn as a long lariat with 2 pieces of sea glass (one polished, one not polished) lots of beads, pearls, Magatama and Miyuki drops, and a vintage seahorse charm.

The free form puddle shaped other end of the lariat.

Hope you'll enjoy it Caroline.
