Deer Dreams

© Sybille Sterk
Do not copy or publish this in any way, shape or form without my written permission.

Inspired by Hannibal the TV series. I have a thing about antlers, so the dream like sequences in Hannibal impressed me greatly.

This is a composite of free and bought resources, and my own images combined and mixed up in Photoshop.
Check it out on Society6.

Please note there is a special (dark) edition of this image only available here on Redbubble. I will only sell 20 of that version:
This one is only available as a print/poster.

Angels and Demons

More Vintage magic... a combination of bought and (found) public domain resources, combined as always in Photoshop. I love mannequins and wings and clouds and fire. You can't go wrong with them, they always go together. :D

The quote is by Christopher Poindexter. The full quote is:

I loved her not for the way she danced with my angels, but for the way the sound of her name could silence my demons

Dissembling - Welcome to the Dark Side

Third in my new series called Dissembling
dis·sem·ble  (d-smbl)
v. dis·sem·bled, dis·sem·bling, dis·sem·bles
1. To disguise or conceal behind a false appearance. See Synonyms at disguise.
2. To make a false show of; feign.
To disguise or conceal one's real nature, motives, or feelings behind a false appearance.

The series is about the different guises and masks we wear.

This particular image is about the dark side we often hide even from ourselves. The more images I create in this series the more I realise that dissembling is about balance, or rather imbalance. The more we hide from ourselves the less balance we achieve and that leaves us less control over who we are and what we do. The dark side is there in all of us, but life becomes ever more politically correct and although anger can be a negative and destructive force if it is out of control, it can also be a freeing and constructive emotion if balanced with consideration and rationality. We need to accept our dark side and use it in the right way which is impossible if we negate the fact that it's there in the first place, hence the name of the image.

Fallen Angel - Photo Manipulation

An image both about the social, political, and historical framework women work within since Eve, but also the personal feeling of being 'flung from grace' when a mistake seems to rock your world and we have to pull ourselves out of the mire and re-invent ourselves.
See the poem here.

Cassandra - Photo Manipulation

Illustration of Cassandra of Troy.

I've always had a thing about Cassandra. My name 'Sybille' is from a Latin word meaning 'prophetess' (Wiki).

This image is set after the fall of Troy and Cassandra  is left with nothing - just a pile of broken bones in front of her and a burning city behind her.

There are variations on what actually happened to Cassandra, but she was given the gift of prophecy by the god Apollo, however, when he tried to get her to sleep with him (or his high priest) in advance for the gift, she refused him. Apollo took part of the gift back - although she still saw what would happen, none of her prophecies would be believed. She foresaw the Trojan Horse and warned her people but they discarded her advice and Troy fell.

The phrase 'I fear the Greeks (even if they are) bearing gifts'  is from the story of the Trojan War and refers to the Trojan Horse - a ruse to get soldiers into the city of Troy as the wooden horse was filled with soldiers.

I think the phrase should have been 'I fear the gods, especially when they come bearing gifts' as the Trojan War started because of a gift Aphrodite gave to Paris - the love of Helena's love - in exchange for naming her the most beautiful goddess.

Despite the gift of prophecy Cassandra had received she could not prevent the fall of Troy.

And the final gift, the Trojan Horse, prooved to be the downfall of the city.

Jezebel

For Lianne and Lisa who could see the images in my poem Jezebel.

Before I started the manipulation I looked up Jezebel on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jezebel and found out she had a very interesting history. Even the historians can't seem to quite agree if she was the devil incarnate or just and independent woman who stood up for what she believed.

I used some stock photos and textures for this:

The rest of the textures and images are mine. I also did a lot of drawing (hair and Alice band, skin colour etc) in Corel Painter plus added lots of my own textures and stock photos.
