Fear of Butterflies

© Sybille Sterk
Do not copy or publish this in any way, shape or form without my written permission.

A mixed media collage of photographs of a peacock butterfly that had been trapped between the two parts of a sash window (and freed after my photo session that really didn't take very long), textures, colour overlays and curve adjustments, and a fake blood image I took ages ago.

I love butterflies and I am not fearful of them at all, but I wonder how I'd feel trapped amongst lots of them...?

Icarus Series

Yearning
Flight
Falling

This is a series of three.
I have a thing about feathers and flying. I am terrified of heights and suffer from vertigo, so I have always felt jealous of birds who have wings and hollow bones that allow them to fly so they never have to fear falling, or rather smashing into the ground. There is such an amazing beauty in watching a bird in flight. Such freedom and happiness.

The first of the three images is about the yearning when you look up and wish yourself to be in the sky amongst the clouds.
The second of the three images is about the gift of flight, being there and feeling the air holding you up.
The third and last of the three images is about the falling, not such a scary thing when you're a bird but terrifying for me.

All three images are edited photographs of feathers. I removed the colour and reduced them to a strong contrast black and white image, then overlaid them with a texture to remove even more of the original photograph before I added subtle colour back into the images. I wanted to create the feeling of Dürer's engravings.

All other images and textures my own or bought. Edited with Photoshop.

On Redbubble you can also get stickers and kids/baby clothes of the first two:

Forbidden Memory

© Sybille Sterk

This was an experiment with my Lensbaby soft focus lens last week on a 'camera walk'. The more I worked on it (in Photoshop) the more it reminded me of the trailer of The Walking Dead (one of my all time favourite series). The combination of the imagery (barbed wire, viewer hidden in the trees) and the textures and soft focus made me think of those memories we can't bear to look at directly, but only sideways and with a squint, hence the name.

All images/textures/brushes my own or bought. Grunge and emotion added in with Photoshop.

All my images are available on Redbubble, Artflakes, Society6 and Bluecanvas as prints, cards, posters, skins for laptops, Blackberry, iPhones and other phones (for the skins go to Bluecanvas). You can now also get most of my images on cushion covers (go to Society6 for these).

I wish I could fly, I'd never be afraid of falling

Taken with Instagram for iPhone. Crow feathers, a twig and some flowers from a plant that self seeded itself in my garden. Combined and edited in Photoshop, textures and curve adjustments added.

I have vertigo so I always wanted to be able to fly so I wouldn't fear heights any longer. I think it's a matter of feeling in control of things. Sometimes I wish I was. LOL

Wonderland I: Nightmare

This is the first illustration in a mini series to accompany my poem Wonderland.

The poem is about dreams and this is the depiction of nightmares. I've tried to pack in as many of the fears most people encounter in their nightmares as I could think of. LOL
There'll be another one or two to follow.
