Snowdrops

 Taken a few weeks back, I just never got round to posting the image. I love snowdrops, like cherryblossom and magnolia they're heralds of spring. These were wild in the middle of the woods.

Snow White

We finally have a bit of snow even if Christmas (and therefore a chance of a White Christmas) is long gone.

This reminded me of Snow White. One of my favourite fairy tales.

Nostalgia, Flirt and Kiss

Nostalgia is a close-up picture of my beautiful white roses fairy lights. They're made of fabric and look almost realistic. I have a thing about fairy lights. Some might say an obsession. LOL However, I love looking at them when it gets dark outside, they always make me smile. The font is called Harting.

Kiss is another close-up picture of one of my fairy light chains. This one is brand new and has beautiful fabric lotus flowers in shades of red on it. The font is Mountains of Christmas.

I am so pleased with this image - the letters are from a vintage Junior Scrabble the background is as is except that I changed the colour and added more texture, however the arrow and the little peeled off heart were already there. I thought it made the perfect image together.

Snow White in her coffin. It's always been one of my favourite fairytales, despite the fact that I was always annoyed that she just didn't learn from her experience, but maybe that's why it's such a good example?

I love fairy tales, so I tried to recreate the feel of Snow White (a little tongue-in-cheek) with this one. You can't beat a red apple. There's a little Adam and Eve in there too....

Death of a Butterfly

This is a conceptual work and I am not sure I can explain it adequately. Normally a butterfly is the symbol of renewal, re-incarnation however, in this the butterfly dies, so the renewal is cancelled. I've made a plain white paper origami butterfly for this to indicate the death of the magic and innocence. On a subconscious level this is deeply feminine and feminist to me, hence the blood on the butterfly and the wall. Once girls turn into women their deaths begin, the only renewal remains in reproduction, until then everything was possible.

This set is inspired by Lucienne Day, a 50s designer. I saw some of her designs on TV the other day and loved them so much that I wanted to do something along those lines. There was a simplicity of design as well as colour about them that spoke to me. Here's the result.

Snowy the Bear

Ta-Da - Snowy the Bear.

My very first knitted toy, made for Ben. It should have been a Christmas present but I got snowed under with request for warmers and it never happened. Have to say I felt a bit daunted by the pattern too...

The pattern is called 'Otto' and is available from Ysolda Teague's Store.

It took me about 4 days to finish the bear and Snowy turned out very cute, but I did have a few issues with the pattern. I think the nose as per pattern is too long and it caused me no end of trouble when I embroidered it with the black yarn. In the end I had to take it apart, shorten it and therefore get rid off any resemblance to a well known German dictator....

I am also not happy with the mistakes I found in the pattern regarding the legs and gusset. Unfortunately, despite the promise of pattern support I got no help Ysolda herself, nor from the Ysolda Ravelry group.

On the whole though Snowy is sweet and much loved.


A personal touch was adding the bouclé yarn embroidery around the ears. The yarn is Sirdar Juicy in White (Coconut) for the main body, Cashcotton in black for the nose and eyes and Rowan Astrakhan in cream for the embroidery around the ears. The stuffing is pure lambswool. Very squishy and soft! :)

I loved knitting with the bamboo yarn as it's lovely and silky and so smooth. Perfect for all sorts of projects.

The pattern got my appetite wetted for some toy knitting. I've almost finished a little cat which is based on my own pattern. I quite fancy making a monkey or a different kind of bear though. We'll see... I'll have to add it to the very long list of projects which gets longer by the day.

The emerald green shrug got put aside whilst Ben was nagging me to make his bear... however, that is almost finished too. AND I did some more yarn dying. Once the yarn has been untangled and wound up into balls I will show you the results.

Daisy-Chain Spectacle Chain

This spectacle chain was a custom order, and I'd never thought of doing it quite this way if the customer hadn't requested something similar to my daisy chain necklace. However, now I've done one I think I'll do more like this in various colours as I am really pleased with how it turned out.

This particular chain is quite long but it can be done at any length. The 'chain' part was crocheted with teeny crocheted flowers.



I then added various flowers (mostly glass apart from the pink centre piece which is vintage lucite) and teeny beads and sewed them onto the crochet flowers.


The flowers near where the chain is attached to the glasses are smaller than the others so they don't get caught in strands of hair.


I've chosen flowers in red/blue/white and lilac with matching beads, which I think are set off nicely by the black cord I used for the chain.


Despite the glass flowers/beads the chain is light but heavy enough to hang nicely and keep you looking pretty whilst making sure you always know where your glasses are.
