the view from the tower

Image taken at Hedingham Castle. I've changed the view through the window, added the water, the mist, the crow and the necklace... and changed the colours and played around with it quite considerably. LOL I like the fairytale atmosphere. :-) I think this would make the perfect book cover.

All images/textures/brushes my own or bought. Edited with Photoshop.

Rapunzel

This is another shot from my first photo shoot. It's my favourite because of the amount of emotion that comes through. I always liked Rapunzel; children always seem to pay for their parents' mistakes and in that way the tale is quite realistic. Depending on the version of the tale you read Rapunzel does quite a lot to free herself, other than most of the other princesses, which only seem to hang around, often asleep or otherwise incapacitated, waiting to be rescued. ;-) I am still waiting for a gung-ho princess, although, saying that Fhiona from Shrek was a good start....

Cut Me

This one is an interpretation of Rapunzel, still going with the fairytale theme here.... Made me think about hair and how the power is 'ours' as long as we cut it, but not when someone else cuts it, then it diminishes us (i.e. what they used to do to women to 'mark' them as prostitutes). I remember some fairytales I read a long time ago, where the only way to 'cure' a witch was by cutting off her hair, she'd become a normal woman then. There is power in hair and the length of it...

Shelved - Photo Manipulation

All is not as it seems... this may look like a romantic image, however, it's actually a 'rant' against all the helpless heroines in fairyland who wait for 'true love's first kiss' and Prince Charming to rescue them from a situation they put themselves in.

For example, shouldn't Snow White have realised after the poisoned comb that maybe she shouldn't trust gifts from an old hag? Shouldn't Sleeping Beauty have listened to her parents and not run off to get herself into trouble? Shouldn't Rapunzel have worked out that she could cut her hair and climb down that tower all by herself? Not exactly the kind of role models girls need growing up. No get up and go and sort yourself out. Give me Sherazade any day...

Thing is, these role models shape the way we think of ourselves and the way we think we should live our lives. Girls as young as 11 go on diets to look 'thin and beautiful'...

How often do we put ourselves on a shelf, waiting for Prince Charming to make our life worth living, when we have the key to make it special and fulfilling all along...
